Eustachian Tube Dilation

What is Eustachian Tube Dilation?

Eustachian tube dilation is a minimally invasive technique used to treat eustachian tube dysfunction – the cause of ear pressure/fullness and ear infections.

While Dr. Elangovan generally recommends this procedure for ear pressure/fullness and recurrent ear infections, patients may also find eustachian tube dilation relieves one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Headaches
  • Ear pain
  • Dizziness
  • Ringing in the ears

Why Eustachian Tube Dilation:

  • Minimally invasive – no incisions
  • Long term solution
  • No risk of permanent hole in the ear drum (as with ear tubes)
  • No need to avoid swimming or getting ears wet (as with ear tubes)
  • Alleviates ear pressure/fullness

What Can I Expect During my Eustachian Tube Dilation?

Eustachian Tube Dilation can be performed alone or in combination with other procedures either in the office or surgical center.  With the nose numbed, a small camera is placed in the nose and a catheter advanced.  The balloon catheter is gently passed into the eustachian tube opening and once positioned the balloon is inflated for 2 minutes.  All instrumentation is then removed.

What Can I Expect After my Eustachian Tube Dilation?

Typically, patients experience mild discomfort for a few days following the procedure.  Most return to work and daily living activities the next day.  Strenuous activity is avoided for about one week.

How Effective is Eustachian Tube Dilation?

Clinical studies of Eustachian tube dilation have shown excellent results.  A success rate of 99.7% was achieved in Eustachian tube dilations, and patients experienced a greater rate of ear drum normalization compared to patients treated with medication alone.  Greater patient quality of life was also achieved.  There were zero adverse events or complications reported.
