Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

What is Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (ESS)?

ESS is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove sinus blockage and establish wide sinus drainage pathways.  It is performed entirely through the nostrils.  This procedure is typically reserved for patients who have severe sinus disease that cannot be controlled with medications or less invasive techniques.

While Dr. Elangovan recommends this procedure for recurring and chronic sinusitis, patients may also find ESS relieves one or more of the following symptoms:

Why ESS?

  • Failure of medical treatment with frequent antibiotics and steroids
  • For treatment of recurrent or chronic sinusitis that failed less invasive techniques
  • Nasal polyps

What Can I Expect During my Functional ESS?

ESS is often performed in the outpatient surgical center under general anesthesia.  Once asleep, an endoscope, a thin lighted camera, is placed through the nostril to magnify and visualize the sinus. Specialized instruments are then placed through the nostrils to remove infected tissue, nasal polyps, and obstructing bone.

What Can I Expect After my ESS?

Typically, patients experience mild pain for about 3-4 days after surgery.  A brief course of antibiotics and nasal saline rinse after surgery is needed to promote healing.  Most return to work within 3-4 days.  Strenuous activity is avoided for about 2-3 weeks.

How Effective is ESS?

ESS has great outcomes.  The procedure has a long record of effectively resolving the most challenging cases of sinus disease.

How Much Does ESS Cost?

Almost all insurances cover ESS.  The cost of your ESS will vary depending on the individualized treatment plan recommended for you and your current health insurance coverage. To get a more accurate assessment of how much your ESS will cost, we encourage you to come in for a private consultation with Dr. Elangovan. At Resolve ENT, we are also happy to offer financing that helps you more easily pay for your treatments at your convenience.
