What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea has become a household name over recent years, but it still commonly misunderstood. This condition causes decreased oxygen supply to the brain and other parts of the body during cycles of sleep. While there are two different types of sleep apnea, the most common variation is called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA occurs when there’s an obstruction, or blockage, of the airways causing the sudden disruption of breathing throughout the night. A less common variation of sleep apnea is called central sleep apnea, which is when there is no blockage of the airway, but the brain doesn’t signal the muscles in the body to breathe. Sleep apnea is a serious condition, and is often experienced with one or more of the following symptoms:

What Causes Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by a blockage in the airway, which we often also see when people are disrupted by snoring. Patients who are at a higher risk of developing sleep apnea have enlarged tonsils, a large tongue that can block the airway, are overweight and have excess fat around the neck, have a naturally narrow airway, or have a neurological condition that does not send signals through the body properly.
What are the Dangers of Sleep Apnea?
Because sleep apnea causes a decrease of oxygen to the brain and other parts of the body, sleep apnea is both physically and mentally taxing. Patients who suffer from sleep apnea may find that they have chronic headaches that are difficult to treat, are consistently tired throughout the day, and struggle to perform at work or school. Patients who have sleep apnea may also become forgetful, depressed, and experience an overwhelming loss of interest in the activities they used to enjoy.
