Is Snoring Bad for my Health?: What You Need to Know

Snoring is often dismissed as a harmless nuisance, but it can signal serious health issues that extend beyond disrupting your sleep. While occasional snoring might not be alarming, habitual snoring could indicate underlying problems with significant health implications.

Snoring occurs when the flow of air through the mouth and nose is partially blocked during sleep, causing the surrounding tissues to vibrate. This obstruction can disrupt the quality of your sleep and lead to more severe conditions. One major concern is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. OSA is linked to increased risks of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension and heart disease. A study published in Sleep Medicine Reviews highlights that untreated OSA is associated with an elevated risk of systemic hypertension, myocardial infarction, and stroke (Peppé et al., 2021).

Moreover, habitual snoring can also contribute to daytime fatigue and impaired cognitive function. Research in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine found that patients with chronic snoring and sleep disturbances showed significant declines in memory and alertness, affecting their overall quality of life and productivity (Smith et al., 2020).

Often those who snore are chronic mouth breathers.  Chronically mouth breathing can cause serious dental issues.  In the short term it can cause dry mouth and over longer periods of time lead to enamel erosion and increased risk of cavities.
