What is Snoring?
If you snore, you’re not alone. This common symptom of breathing, sinus, and sleep concerns affects up to 45 percent of adults in the United States every year. Caused when the tissues in your nose and throat relax, snoring narrows your airways and creates its signature sound by creating an intense vibration. Snoring can vary from person-to-person depending on how restricted the airflow is in the nose, mouth, and throat. While snoring itself is common and shouldn’t cause too much concern, patients should be aware their snoring may become alarming if they experience it with one or more of the following symptoms:
- Mouth breathing
- Sleep apnea
- Poor sleep
- Nasal obstruction and congestion
- Chronic sinusitis
- Ear infections

What Causes Snoring?
Snoring is the sound produced when the muscles in the nose, mouth, and throat relax, narrowing the airways and causing a vibration. While snoring may be an innocent condition, patients may find that their snoring is caused by a much more serious underlying concern. Studies have shown patients who have nasal blockages or enlarged tonsils tend to snore more, as their airways are naturally limited. Studies also prove that a buildup of fat around the neck caused by weight gain can also exacerbate snoring and sleep apnea.
What are the Dangers of Snoring?
While light snoring or periodic snoring is a harmless symptom within itself, patients who experience frequent and aggressive snoring have a higher risk of developing complications over time. Patients who experience snoring each night in combination with other symptoms listed above may find that they are constantly tired, have trouble concentrating on simple tasks, have high blood pressure, and have a higher risk of developing heart disease. Patients who snore regularly may also have a higher risk of having a stroke over a period of years.
